Ooty is situated in the Nilgiri hills, also known as The Blue Mountains. It is the most famous hill station in south of the Vindhyas, a forested area in Nilgiri mountains. Ooty was originally known as Ootacamund which is now obscure. It is unknown whether this name comes from the blue smoky haze given off by the eucalyptus trees that cover the area, or because of the kurunji flower, which blooms every twelve years giving the slopes a bluish tinge. Ooty served as the summer capital of the Madras Presidency and other small kingdoms, much visited by British during the colonial days, and as today, a popular tourism destination. Ooty's resplendent tea plantations and red roofed bungalows shows a blend of British colonial architecture and a natural beauty unique to Southern India. Ooty was originally a tribal land which is mostly occupied by the Toda along with some other tribes. Later it was converted into summer retreat for the British as they were completely enthralled by the beauty of the place.
